IELTS Overview
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English language proficiency assessment. Introduced in 1980, it has grown to become one of the most widely accepted tests for evaluating English language skills. IELTS is designed to measure an individual’s ability to understand and use English effectively in both academic and general settings.

There are two main types of IELTS tests

Format of the IELTS Test
The Listening section evaluates a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English in different contexts. Candidates listen to a series of audio recordings and answer 40 questions based on the information they hear. This section lasts approximately 30 minutes.

The Writing section consists of two tasks. In Task 1, candidates are required to write at least 150 words describing, summarizing, or explaining the given information or situation. In Task 2, candidates write an essay of at least 250 words, presenting their opinion, argument, or response to a given topic. This section assesses clarity, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to express ideas effectively in written English.
The Reading section assesses a candidate’s ability to understand written English. Candidates read three passages and answer questions based on the information provided. This section is designed to test reading skills such as identifying main ideas, understanding details, recognizing opinions, and interpreting meaning. The total time for this section is 60 minutes.
The Speaking section evaluates a candidate’s ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English. It is conducted as a face-to-face interview with an examiner and includes questions on familiar topics, a short individual speaking task, and a discussion. This section usually lasts 11 to 14 minutes and assesses fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and overall communication skills.
